Europska organizacija za molekularnu biologiju (EMBO - European Molecular Biology Organization) je izabrala 37 novih članova i 3 pridružena člana (EMBO info). Među njima je izabran i član Connecta - Prof. Ivan Đikić s Goethe Sveučilišta u Frankfurtu. Ispod se nalazi press release Medicinskog fakulteta Goethe Sveučilišta. PRESS RELEASE Frankfurt, 15. Oct. 2004
EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) announced today the election of 37 new members and 3 associated members to its organisation. The EMBO membership includes the leading researchers in Europe and represents a cross-section of the life science community. The organization has approximately 1200 elected members in Europe and 100 associate members worldwide. 36 EMBO members are Nobel Prize winners. EMBO elects new members annually on the basis of proven excellence in molecular biology research.
Among the new elected EMBO members is a Croatian scientist Dr. Ivan Đikić, professor the Goethe University School of Medicine and leader of the Molecular Signaling Dr. Ivan Đikić has been recognized for his work on molecular characterization of and signaling by growth factor receptors and understanding how ubiquitination regulates functions. His contribution to the education and training of molecular biologists in (via organization of the Dubrovnik conferences on cellular signaling) has been internationally praised. Dr. Đikić (38) is at present among the youngest members of EMBO.
Ivan Đikić graduated at the Medical School University of Zagreb, Croatia in 1991. Dr. Đikić next joined the laboratory of Dr. Joseph Schlessinger in New York, where he completed his Ph.D. and postdoctoral training. During this period, he made significant contributions to the identification of protein tyrosine kinase pathways involved in regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation.
In 1997, Ivan Đikić started his own research group at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Uppsala , Sweden, studying the molecular basis of cancer and signaling by growth factor receptors. His research led to the landmark discovery of a novel pathway by which activated receptors are down-regulated and degraded. These results contributed to better molecular understanding of actions of novel anti-cancer therapeutics.
In 2003, Dr. Đikić moved his group to the Goethe University in Frankfurt. His current and future research interests are focused on signaling pathways that control cell life and the reasons why they are deregulated in diseases such as cancer.
Ivan Đikić has published more than 60 papers on signaling research in prestigious journals including Nature, Cell, Science, Nature Cell Biology and Proceeding of National Academy of Sciences USA. He has also received a number of international distinctions for his research including the Fernstrom Price (Lund, 2002), the Swedish Strategic Fund award for leaders in science (Stockholm, 2000) and the Boehringer Ingelheim Funds award (Stuttgart, 1997). Most recently, Ivan Đikić was honored by election to the EMBO membership.
