POST-DOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE IN:
METAGENOMICS OF EUKARYOTIC SOIL MICROBIAL COMMUNITIES – ADAPTATION
TO HEAVY METAL POLLUTIONS
The postdoctoral position is available for a maximum of 14 months in the Microbial Ecology
Laboratory, CNRS-University Lyon 1 to study at the molecular level heavy metal adaptation
by the different eukaryotic microorganisms that live in a long term-contaminated soil.
The laboratory has developed a new environmental genomics approach
(metatranscriptomic), based on the direct extraction from soil of polyadenylated messenger
RNA allowing construction of environmental cDNA libraries (Bailly et al. 2007 ISME J 1:632-
642). These libraries are representative of the cellular functions expressed in the
contaminated soils by the different eukaryotic microorganisms (fungi, protists,
representatives of the micro and mesofauna…).
Candidate genes that participate to metal homeostasis and detoxication will be identified by
functional complementation of yeast metal sensitive mutants and by mining EST sequences
that will be generated by the Genoscope Sequencing Centre. Genes and the coded proteins
will be characterised in yeast and other heterologous systems for their selectivity towards
different metals, subcellular localisation and biological activity. The successful applicant will
also participate in the global annotation and analysis of the environmental EST sequences in
collaboration with bioinformaticians.
Experience in DNA and RNA manipulations, cloning, protein sequence analysis and basic
biochemical techniques will be helpful for this position. Experience in yeast and/or
filamentous fungal genetics will be a plus.
The position is funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche and is available
immediately. Only applicants who have obtained their PhD in the last 12 months are eligible.
Funding is available for 14 months on an initial net salary basis of ca 1740 Euros per month.
